Item G28: Philadelphia Cricket Club
Militia Hill Course
Three golfers will enjoy a fabulous round of golf, with lunch, at the new Militia Hill Course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
When the Golf Association of Philadelphia was organized in 1897, The Philadelphia Cricket Club was one of four founding members. The nine-hole course was built in 1895 and a new eighteen-hole course in 1897. The old eighteen-hole course, known as St. Martin’s and now reduced to a pleasant nine-hole layout, hosted the United States Open Championships in 1907 and 1910. The Club’s head professional a the time, Willy Anderson, won four U.S. Open Championships, which is a record equaled only by Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus.
The Militia Hill Course opened on April 27, 2002. The design team of Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry crafted this golf course out of an old Revolutionary War encampment. From the championship tees it plays to a par of 72 with a demanding length of 7,370 yards. Golf Digest nominated the course for best new course category for the year 2003.
