The Melmark Players

The Melmark Players theatre group, a voluntary program composed of adults from our Meadows program, performs two full-length musical productions each year. The group thrives under the direction of Producer Kris Benach and a drove of volunteers who assist with everything from videotaping events and controlling lights to creating costumes.

The Melmark Players evolved from the remnants of the Meadows physical education class. Gym had been popular when participants were in their twenties, but as they began to age they sought activities with more variety and challenge. After some brainstorming, the group elected to pursue drama, a love that had been fostered in them as children, after years of performing in Melmark’s annual presentation of the Nutcracker.

Now as adults they arrive at program an hour early for rehearsals, and those living off campus even make it on Sundays. Many of the Players appear to be naturals in front of an audience. Others work seriously learning lines and choreography moves, and seem to have much more energy than they ever had for gym activities. The experience has uncovered thespians waiting to be discovered and allowed many to build self-confidence, stay focused, and learn to work as a group. They incorporate these activities well into their busy lives.

Nearly seven years ago they staged Grease, their first production, for a small audience of Melmark school students. Since that time, they have delighted audiences with performances of Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, South Pacific, Beauty and the Beast, and Peter Pan. For the past two years, audiences of the entire Melmark community—family members, staff, donors, friends, and neighbors—fill our auditorium to complete capacity. The group, which consists of 20 to 22 actors and stage crew members, delights to cheers and frequent standing ovations.
