Abstract:

The careful selection of prompts and prompt-fading procedures are two key variables in promoting effective and efficient learning. Although there is no standard prompting or fading procedures that work with all clients for all skills, more recently researchers have established tools to help identify efficacious prompts and strategies for fading. We will begin this presentation with a review of the instructional cycle: the environment, motivating operations, discriminative stimuli, prompts, response, and consequences. We will discuss variables influencing the selection of prompts and fading strategies including: learner profile, stimulus control, and reinforcement. A review of research on prompts and prompt-fading strategies will be presented along with case studies, and key takeaways for practitioners.

Objectives:

    • Participants will be able to define prompts and prompt-fading procedures.
    • Participants will be able to label prompt prerequisites, assess client profile (i.e., skill repertoire and functional reinforcers), and identify appropriate prompts.
    • Participants will be able to identify for a target skill the following: prerequisite skills, materials, appropriate stimulus control and reinforcement.
