Abstract:

Behavior analytic instructional design requires a systematic approach to the contingencies surrounding learning. One must analyze learning goals, carefully design instruction, select appropriate instructional strategies, and evaluate program outcomes. Different types of learning (e.g., vocal verbal, motor, complex skills) require tailored instructional protocols to promote acquisition and fluency. Instruction should align to the critical attributes of each learning task and target generalized performance across settings. In this workshop we’ll discuss optimal instruction sequences that promote transfer of stimulus control. Explicit instruction, opportunities for active student responding, and effective feedback will be reviewed, as well as how evaluation can be used to assess mastery, retention, generalization, and guide data-based revisions to the instructional program. Workshop participant outcomes include increased knowledge of research-based principles, and an increased understanding of how to develop and refine instruction to maximize meaningful learner outcomes.
